How to get into daily reading!

Is reading part of your 2020 resolutions? Do you find yourself owning a pile of books you haven’t read and you just don’t find the time to do so?  Do you want to get in the habit of reading every day?

Well, here are some pro-tips on how to make reading part of your daily routine and what benefits this can bring you. 


It is commonly known that in Mexico, the reading rates are below those recorded by other nations. As of 2018, the average reading of Mexicans is 3.8 books per year! 


Reading every day can bring you lots of benefits that probably you are not aware of. For instance, reading can bring better cognitive mental stimulation. Every time you read you expand your vocabulary, strengthening your writing abilities. Additional to lowering stress levels and releasing the tension, it helps with depression and improves your memory and focus. So, if you are having a stressful day, the best way to unwind is to pick up one of those books that have been piling up. Getting into daily reading can improve balance in the workspace by lowering tension, as well as giving you a better night sleep. It enhances your imagination and improves your brain exercise. Yes, just like other muscles in your body, your brain needs to exercise! By reading every day, you stimulate and boost your mind!


Here are some tips you may apply to help you to start this new habit:

  • Tip #1: make time to read. We live in a busy world, and all our time is taken up between work, kids and social events. But if you literally make a space in your calendar to read, it will make you commit to doing it.

  • Tip # 2: always carry your book with you! You never know when you might have a few spare moments to read. For example, in the waiting room at the doctor's appointment, after you have lunch, waiting for your public transport commute. 

  • Tip #3: you can try audiobooks as well! It’s a great way to spend the time you have while you get to work. By listening to audiobooks you can improve your memory, focus and attention span. Furthermore, it improves pronunciation and fluency. It builds critical thinking and comprehension. 

  • Tip #4: Have your next book ready, this will save up time when you finish your current read! 

  • Tip #5: The last and most important tip. Read whatever makes you happy. Read whatever you want and on whatever topic you are interested in. There is no worse demotivator than a book that you don’t enjoy. You can find many genres and authors out there, the only way to find out which is your favorite is to start reading! 

Get on board with this daily habit! We recently started a book club here at IPS! We choose a book, everyone reads along and then we have meetings to discuss it together. This is a great way to get into reading every day. We promote the space for balance and self-care in our organizational climate. In this initiative, we discuss and debate several aspects of the plot as well as the development of the main characters. We have the opportunity to express our point of view.
